Here’s how a beginner can start playing poker

Poker is any number of card games in which a player bets that the value of his or her hand is greater than that of the hands held by others, in which Each succeeding player must either match or raise the wager or leave the game and the player with the best hand at the end of the betting wins the pot.

1. Know the rules of the game


It is extremely crucial to know about the rules of the game, be it any poker game like Five Card Draw,  Video Poker,  Texas Hold’em, or omaha poker, any player should be aware of how the game works.  To be very honest the game is not that complicated but before playing you should understand the game.

2. Hand Rankings

Rookies often struggle with one thing which is knowing which hand of cards wins. Indeed between pairs and straights and flushes, it could get really confusing. You can refer to different chats to familiarize yourself with how the hands rank. Usually, a pair or two pairs take the pot

3. Vocabulary

It does not matter if it is a casual game, it is important to know the vocabulary.

A short glossary is found to be most common while playing poker.

  • Blinds: It is nothing but a forced bet that is put in by 2 players who are to the left of the dealer.  There are 2 blinds, small blind, and big blind. For instance, if the minimum bet is 10, the small blind would be 5 and the big blind would be 10

  • Call: It means making a bet equal to the last bet or raise the bet.

  • Check: It basically means to not bet and check what other players are doing.
    Note that a player can only check if no bets have been made. If a bet has been made, the player must either call or raise.

4. Table Etiquette

It is important to be aware of the rules and vocabulary of poker, but it is equally important to be mindful of table etiquette while playing poker. Simple table etiquette will save you from looking like a newbie.

Players should pay attention to the game, notice who is making bets, who are blind, which player is checking. It will help you play the game better and also make you a good sport since you are not distracting anyone but playing your own game.

Always keep your cards on the table and insight, this helps the dealer to know that you are still in the game and it also helps other players develop trust because let’s just say that people have been caught partaking in some funny side business and cheating.
